International Comet Quarterly

ICQ homepage illustration

The illustration atop the ICQ homepage is from a woodcut illustration of a (rather stylized) comet that was perhaps first published in the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493. This block was used numerous times for different comets (both in the Nuremberg Chronicle and evidently also in other books published by the same German publisher) and thus didn't obviously refer to any specific comet. It is thought that the famous artist Albrecht Duerer had some part in producing many of the illustrations for this large book [see, for example, A. Wilson 1978, The Making of the Nuremberg Chronicle, Amsterdam: Nico Israel], and Duerer may have created this specific comet woodcut.
